Dr.Narayana Rao came all the way
from Hyderabad and participated in the workshop. He said that news papers
and Magazines places an important role in the development of Agriculture
activities. He said that new type of Pests & Diseases are making
damage to the farmers and it is the primary duty of the press to give
relevant information to the farming community from time to time. The
success stories and the experiences of the farmers may be documented and
published in the media, so that it will create awareness and encouragement
to the other farmers to adopt new technologies. It is necessary to spare
some place for the Question & Answers column, so that the farmer can
get his answer from the expert & Eminent Scientists.
He also said that, the new
technologies and the new varieties released by the universities may reach
to the farmers through Electronic & Print media also by way of
printing of Pamphlet, Posters, Small Books. He also felt that the market
information about the Agriculture produce may also be reached timely
through print media. This type of conducting seminar will also helps the
media persons to understand the importance of Agriculture activities.

He said that media plays an
important role in transfer of technology from Lab to Land.
Electronic media is also giving latest information to the farming
community. He also felt that to have more awareness to the rural news
correspondents, study tours / trainings may be conducted to them. Still
there is lot of scope for the officers to give time-to-time information /
advice to the farmers through the Electronic & Print media.

He said that the officials have
to give the information relating to the farming community in a simple and
common language so that the farmer can easily understand and adopt the
techniques. He said the Newspapers will act like a bridge between the
Department Officials and Farmers. Some of the Newspapers are already
allotted some space / column for the Agriculture and allied activities,
hence all the officers can utilize the opportunity and send the messages
through the correspondents or directly to the editor.

He said that, it is necessary to
create awareness to the farmers through study tours and also by conducting
demonstration plots, it is also important to educate the farmers to
decrease the cost of cultivation and to increase the production. He also
said that, some of the officers are not giving the press note in full
shape, there by making the News papers to print incomplete News, which
ultimately leads to confusion. He felt that, ‘ATMA’ plays an important
role in technology dissemination in the district.

He said that farmers have to
take all preventive steps in control of Pests & Diseases. He said that
the media has to given more focus on Agriculture allied activities and
also on success stories, so that other farmers will be motivated.
“ATMA” has to give more thrust to bring the success stories to the
farmers through the print and electronic media. Government may also give
more co-operation to the media for bringing of the News items relating to
the farming community.

He said that the new
technologies may be pre-tested by the universities before releasing to the
farmers. The relevant and adoptable technology that suits to the local
conditions may be popularized. Since the farmer holdings in the country
are very small, the Agriculture mechanization is not taken up as in the
western countries. He said that it is necessary to educate the farmers to
take up the crops based on soil conditions, and market situation and make
the farming a profitable one. Lot of information on agriculture and allies
schemes is now available in the market and it is necessary to the farmers
to choose the correct one.

He said the training may be
given to the correspondent on the Agriculture & allied activities so
that they can gain some technical knowledge and it will help them to give
correct and appropriate news to the farming community. He said as ATMA
controls the Paramathma, like wise, the “ATMA” is working duly co-ordinating
with all the line departments and is working to help the farmers. The
officers at mandal level may have more co-ordination with the
correspondents and give the latest information, New Technologies, New
Innovations to the farming community from time to time through the Media.

He said that Doordarshan has
allotted particular time for publishing Agricultural Activities. The
programmes Co-ordinators are basically non-technical people and hence the
importance for the items may not be specially known. Recruitment for the
technical information post may be filled with technical staff, so that
message to farmers may be reached timely and technically.

He said that the All India Radio
is giving Agriculture information very cheaply to the farming community.
Till today most of the rural people are getting information through Radio
only. 98% of the farming community is using Radio as their source for
Agriculture and allies activities information.
ATMA can purchase FM Band radio
sets and give to the farmers clubs, so that the climatic conditions, Pests
& Diseases information will reach to the farmers with less cost and
this opportunity may be utilized by the ATMA for transfer of technology.

The Research findings from Lab
to land may be taken up in a effective way. Awareness programmes may be
conducted to the farmers to know their soil fertility and availability of
nutrients and Soil Health Management. The farmers may be encouraged to
take up agriculture relative activities like Poultry, Dairies for getting
additional and assured income.

He felt that, the scientific
findings are not reaching to the farmers properly. The new varieties and
the new Technologies developed by the Agriculture Universities are not
being popularized. In this connection, he requests the media people to
give their co-operation for transfer of technology from Lab to Land. He
said that 69% of the population is depending on Agriculture & allied
activities so the media has to give special status to the Agriculture and
allied activities and to give more coverage to this sector.
He also said that, the
Agriculture programmes covered in Doordarshan are not qualitative as they
are being produced by the non-technical persons.
The programmes coming in ETV
& Theja / Gemini TV are good and university is giving their messages
from time to time through them.

He said that, when the Anthrax
out break, the TV & Print media played are important role and created
awareness to the farmers to take preventive steps. He also feels that,
whenever a correspondent receives a message, he should consult the local
officers for confirmation of the message before publishing in the
newspaper in order to avoid mispropagation.

He said that, Farmers are still
adopting old technologies and it is necessary to educate the farmers to
take up the crops as per the market demand and soil condition. The farmers
have to change their cropping pattern and adopt new technologies. He also
feels that positive journalism will always helps to give correct
information.

He explained that, Sericulture
in India stands 2nd in the world in the production and in
Rayalaseema Region, Ananthapur stands first. He advised to farmers to take
up new high yielding varieties instead of traditional varieties for
getting higher production. – Model village concept where the new
varieties like “Bi-voltine” are taken up may be popularized through
Media.

He said that the ATMA can
utilize the services of NGO for transfer of technology and for
popularization of innovation activities. Training programmes for
motivation of farmers can also be implemented through NGOs.

More subsidies may be given to
the farmers like transport subsidy, for getting higher production and
remunerative prices. He also said that the Government & ATMA may
encourage alternative farming instead of alternative crops.

new crop, one should study the market. He requests the ATMA to give
support to the farmers for selling their produce.

He said that, Government is
charging more rate of interest on loans from the farmers than the
industries. This has to be streamlined. Storage facilities and market
information may be provided for getting remuneration prices to the
farmers.

AP is producing 50% of the eggs
produced in India. Poultry industries in utilizing 70 lakh tones of Maize
produced in India. There is lot of demand for Maize Jowar & Bajra for
Poultry industry for feed. He request the media to give more publicity to
the farmers for taking of above crops as there is assured market to them.

experience to all the Media people, farmers & officials for sharing
their ideas and come to a conclusion. ATMA conducted this workshop at a
right time. He also said that necessary steps may be taken to strengthen
and activate the “Rythu Clubs”.

He has conducted a slide show on
Social Marketing, Action Plan 2003 and explained in detail about the
different aspects in the project. He also explained the new extension
system proposed by the Directorate of Extension, Ministry of Agriculture,
Government of India, New Delhi. Finally he proposed vote of thanks to all
participants and conveyed special thanks to the Project Director, ATMA for
taken special interest in arrange this workshop very successfully.
