Introduction  The Shepherds of Chittoor District are rearing two types of Sheep. They are Bunnur and Nellore breed. It is observed that  both these varieties of sheep are genetically very poor with regard to meat and wool. As a result, the farmers are not able to better their economy and living conditions.

Source of Innovation:

In order to improve the quality and quantity of meat and wool of both available breeds of sheep of Bunnur and Nellore, it is proposed to cross them with  Exotic Rambouillet. The main breed characters are large size, white in colour, profile. The average weight of ram is 125 Kgs and even in 90 Kgs and yield good quality of wool yield of 4 to 5 Kgs per year. It will be an innovative and beneficial extention strategy to the farmers under the existing Eco-System.

REASONS FOR ADOPTION :

The Rambouillet sheep rearing is very successful in Kolar of Karanataka State. The Agro-Eco System of Punganur is similar to that of Kolar district.

ATMA, Chittoor has introduced 20 Nos of Rambouillet in Adavinethunipalli and Mallepalli villages in Punganur Block to the sheep FIGs duly providing financial loan of Rs.2500/- from the Indian Bank, Punganur. ATMA, Chitoor has given Rs.500/- per each ram as a subsidy as an incentive for introduction of new breed.

The BTT officer-in-charge Dr.Balakrishna Rao who is Assistant Director of Animal Husbandry, frequently visited the village and given technical advice to the beneficiaries.

Yielding:

After 10 to 11 months, the Rambouillet Rams have attained an average weight of 70 to 75 Kgs and successfully crossed with the local breed. The FIG sheep farmers are impressed about the performance of the Rambouillet Breed. The progeny of the 1st generation Rambouillet sheep are also very healthy and looking good.

Marketing

The Sheep Breeders Association, Kolar agreed to purchase the wool produced.

Achievement:

This success story has attracted number of farmers through out the district and they are Voluntarily gone to the Kolar and brought the Rambouillet breeding rams for further multiplication.
